During the 19th century, Seraing used to be a prosperous city, thanks to the coal mines and steel industries. The former plants that brought the city up to its golden age have fallen into ruins and “Cockerill” is nothing but a name that evokes distant memories. What is left of this prosperous time is a city disfigured by scars.
For many generations, the Cockerill industries have been the beating heart of Seraing. For the ones who came after the city's decline, they are nothing more than a distant tale. “Seraing, cité de demain” (Seraing, city of tomorrow) is the 21st century city motto. Since 2005, the city had to reset new goals and dynamics. On the main street, next to those ruins, stand now brand new, clean, buildings.
